While most managers know that it is their responsibility to ensure that their employees are fully trained in the use of any MEWP equipment they will be asked to operate, the responsibilities of managers actually go much further.

 

It is the manager, rather than the operative, who must decide whether a machine such as a MEWP is required, and it is also the manager who is responsible for any machine’s safe use, meaning that their own knowledge needs to be continually refreshed.

 

In order to provide an easy way for managers to ensure their knowledge is up-to-date, the IPAF MEWPs for managers course is a one-day classroom-based training course aimed specifically at those who are likely to make executive decisions about the use of MEWPs.

 

Now in its seventh year, the course covers all the relevant legislation for site operation and use of equipment, from work at height to LOLER (Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and the code of conduct for the safe use of MEWPs, BS8460. The CDM Regulations and more general health and safety legislation are also covered.

 

The course also ensures that managers have a good knowledge of the various terms and conditions that apply when hiring a MEWP, and understand that the point at which when they become responsible for the maintenance of a hired machine may vary from hire company to hire company, meaning that the onus is on them to check.  

 

Also on the syllabus is how managers must get to grips with the operator’s crucial role in carrying out daily inspections and logging the results, and that they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that this is done correctly.
