When driving a picker at a height what do you have to wear?
The standard safety equipment for using a boom type platform should be adequate for safety when you're traversing the cherry picker with the cage raised. That is:
- A full body harness (we recommend ZT Safety Harnesses)
- A short, adjustable restraint lanyard, fixed to a designated anchorage point inside the cage (the Accon block is very popular)
However, before working at height decisions regarding fall protection equipment use must come from a job specific risk assessment by trained personnel.
Before use, safety harnesses should be inspected by a competent person and their state logged under a regular programme to ensure they are safe. The operator should also inspect their harness before use. (You can learn about our half-day harness training course here.)
As well as fall protection equipment, the correct general protective equipment should also be worn. This may include:
- Hard hat with chin strap
- High visibility clothing
- Footwear with steel toe caps
- Eye protection
