Boost for Thousands of Workers as Agreement Reached on Industry's Largest Pay Deal

Around 200,000 construction workers across the UK will see their pay packets rise following agreement between employers and unions.

The Construction Industry Joint Council Working Rule Agreement is the largest of its kind in the industry. The agreement is negotiated between employers and union representatives from Unite and GMB.

As part of the ground-breaking two year pay and conditions settlement, the following has been agreed – effective from June 25th:

·       Basic pay rates will increase by 3.2% with a further 2.9% increase in June 2019

·       Industry Sick Pay (ISP) will increase by 6.1% and the duration of payment extended from 10 to 13 weeks

·       The nightly lodging allowance will increase by 7.8% to £40.00 per night

·       Starting pay for apprentices and later in the year will increase by 7% to £5.50 per hour  

Additionally, later in the year the death in service benefit will increase from £32,500 to £40,000 doubled to £80,000 if death occurs either at work or travelling to or from work.

Gerry Lean, Employer’s Secretary said “These negotiations have been conducted in a spirt of good will and co-operation demonstrating the excellent relationship between Employers and Unions. This deal gives Operatives an above inflation pay rise with the certainty of another increase next year and significant improvements in fringe benefits. It will allow Employers to plan ahead over the next two years with certainty in their employment costs.”

Employers and Unions are now turning their attention to undertake a “root and branch” review of the Collective Agreement under the initiative – “The Working Rule Agreement – a better agreement for all” with a view to making it more attractive to both Employers and Operatives. The review is focussing on a Large Sites Supplement, attracting a more diverse workforce and a greater focus on apprentices. Redundant aspects within the agreement are being reviewed and consideration to introducing new, modern, elements.
