F100 Photo Competition - Richard Litherland
This month’s F100 winner shows a piece of Facelift kit helping workers to reach the heights of the former Royal Lunatic Asylum (or Holloway Sanatorium), in Virginia Water, Surrey, now luxury residential accommodation managed by Knight Frank.
Completed in 1885, the former sanatorium – conceived to treat ‘the insane of the middle class’ - is a sister building to Royal Holloway College, and clearly visible from the M25. After lying derelict from the 1980s, the building began to be restored in 1994 and now boasts 23 three and four-storey town houses, a spa complex, gymnasium and an all-weather tennis court in what English Heritage described as one of the largest art-conservation projects in Europe.
