Fearless fire dog Dexter completes 'height training' in Derby

A ‘fire dog’ from Derby had his head for heights tested last month as part of his training to work with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Footage published by the Derby Telegraph showed the fearless pup dropping 15ft from the top of a tower as part of his training.

Using his keen Spaniel senses, Dexter’s job is to sniff out accelerants, such as petrol at the scene of fires in order to prove whether a fire was started deliberately.  However because – especially in house fires – staircases are often burned out, he will need to be moved from floor to floor using a harness and rope, meaning Dexter needs to be confident in his sniffing skills even when he is being manoeuvred back and forth in mid-air. Luckily, Dexter doesn’t seem to get scared in such hairy situations!
