London contractor fined £20k after roof fall

A south London building maintenance contractor has been fined £20,000 for safety failings after an employee fell from a roof

Southwark Crown Court heard how in February 2014 an employee of Aspect Maintenance Services Ltd London was repairing the roof a house in Tooting when he slipped and fell, landing onto a table on the patio area below. There was no edge protection on the roof at the time of the accident. He broke his jaw and an elbow.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted.

Aspect Maintenance Services Ltd, of Rufus Business Centre, Ravensbury Terrace, London, admitted that it had failed to ensure that the roof work was properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out in a manner which is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe. It was fined a total of £20,000, and ordered to pay £4,735 in costs.

HSE inspector Gavin Pugh said after the hearing: “All work on roofs should be sufficiently risk assessed before any work is carried out. Edge protection or other equally effective safety measures should be in place for anything other than very short term work.”
