Average course length is 7 hours, however this may vary dependant on the Trainee's experience.

Courses can be held on your own site or at any of our Training Centres, situated in Newcastle*, Liverpool*, Birmingham, East London*, South London*, Hickstead (West Sussex), Ashford, (Kent)* & Southampton. (*Indoor Training Centre).

This one day course aims to provide a nationally recognised user and inspection course for ladders & step ladders enabling users to safely use, carry out and document periodic statutory inspections.

On completing the course, you will be competent to:

  • Assess and determine when it is appropriate to use ladders & step ladders
  • Correctly locate and safely use ladders & step ladders
  • Carry out the pre-use inspection of ladders & step ladders for damage
  • Accurately record details of ladders & step ladders
  • Identify component parts using industry standard naming conventions.
  • Thoroughly inspect ladders & step ladders and identify safety critical faults.
  • Record your findings in accordance with statutory requirements (as outlined in PUWER ACOP's 163)
  • Recommend action to be taken if faults found.

And you will have an understanding of:

  • Legislation & regulations affecting work at height.
  • Product standards & classifications for ladders & step ladders.
  • Hazards affecting the use of ladders & step ladders.
  • The relevant legislation, guidance and ACOP's governing the inspection of ladders and step ladders
  • The difference between pre-use and formal inspections.
  • Common manufacturing processes used and their implications for the cost-effectiveness of repairs.
  • The difference between maintenance & repairs and who is allowed to do them.
  • The correct methods of disposal of equipment at the end of it's working life.


  • Certification is valid for 5 years
  • Successful delegates will be issued with a Ladder Association Certificate and I.D. Card
