UKCG makes PAL+ advanced operator training compulsory
The UK Contractors Group (UKCG) has made PAL+ advanced operator training a mandatory requirement for net riggers and steel erectors working on UKCG sites.
The change means that all net riggers and steel erectors, along with their associated trades (e.g. painters and welders) that are working in erection or netting activities, or operating mobile, static booms or scissor lifts, will be required to hold IPAF PAL+ or CPCS Competent Operator Certification. The policy will come into effect in November 2013.
Gordon Leicester, Managing Director of Facelift commented: “Recent research has shown that knowledge of entrapment, and how it can be avoided, is still low, so we certainly feel that mandating this training is a step in the right direction.”
PAL+ is an additional one day course of category-specific training for MEWP operators working in higher risk or particularly challenging environments. Undertaking and passing the course allows delegates to add additional training categories to their PAL cards as proof of competence in particularly high-risk situations.
The UKCG is currently consulting with a view to progressively extending the requirement for IPAF PAL+ or CPCS Competent operator certifications to other trades.
